The Tasty Word

A synesthete's adventures in the kitchen.
This is my main cooking blog, but I sometimes post about books (especially cookbooks, obviously), synesthesia, and pictures of kitchen decor, tea, coffee, and other things vaguely food-related that strike my fancy. My book blog is over at Silent Librarian.

Different types of tea should be brewed at different temperatures for different lengths of time. Opinions vary, but here’s some help to get you started:

Giveaways sort of cheer me up. I like them. They make me happy, and they make you happy. And I’m having a weirdish day, and need a happy boost, so I’m doing a mini give away over the weekend! Here’s the lowdown:
There will be THREE winners.
First place winner (first name drawn) will win:-A 12”X18” print of John -A 12”X18” print of Sherlock-AND any ONE of my fandom teas available on Adagio
Second place winner (second name drawn) will win:-ONE of the prints, their choice of John or Sherlock-any ONE of my fandom teas
Third place winner (last name drawn) will win: -EITHER their choice of one of the prints (John or Sherlock) OR their choice of a fandom tea
TO ENTER:
Reblog ONLY UP TO 2 TIMES until FRIDAY September 14, 11:59 PM EST because I’m weird. I’ll be able to tell if you went nutso and reblogged a million times.
Likes WILL count too. Why not. So that’s a total of three entries possible per person.
I will NOT count blogs that are used exclusively for reblogging giveaways. Those things never seem…. right, you know?
You don’t have to be following me to win, you just have to have your ask open.
A HUGE NOTE: I can ship THE PRINTS to Australia and New Zealand, but I CANNOT ship the teas there. I think there might be some other countries that also don’t allow shipment of teas. If you’re not sure if you can get the tea in your country, please check Adagio’s shipping policy. If you win and you’re in one of those countries and I can’t send you tea, we’ll figure out an alternate.
That said, yeah, this is open to anyone in the world, just make sure you have your parents permission if you’re under 18

SHERLOCK’S SPICY SUGAR COOKIES

Just in case people aren’t already sick of me posting about baking, here are some super yummy cookies.

 Ingredients

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 3/4 cups white sugar
teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon finely ground black pepper (I know, I know. Just do it.)
1 cup unsalted butter (infused with tea)
8 tsp loose tea leaves
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Infusin’ Da Butter

  1. Put butter in saucepan and melt completely.
  2. Add tea leaves.
  3. Heat on low for 5 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 more minutes.
  5. Press leaves through a fine sieve and drain as much butter as you can.

Bakin’ Da Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl combine sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, allspice and black pepper. Remove 1/4 cup of the sugar-spice mixture and set aside for rolling the cookies.
  4. In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar-spice mixture until fully mixed.
  5. Beat in egg and vanilla extract.
  6. Slowly blend in dry ingredients until combined.
  7. Roll dough into little balls and then into the left over sugar-spice mixture. Place dough balls on prepared baking sheet about 1 1/2 inches apart.
  8. Bake in preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes.
  9. Let stand on baking sheet two minutes before removing to cool.
  10. Give them to someone else to eat. Eating’s boring.

We’re giving away a Concert Teapot.

Why? Why Not? Maybe because it’s a Thursday. Or maybe the teapot is haunted and moving on its own. Either way, our loss is your gain.

HOW TO WIN:

  • You may reblog this post once a day for the next week. We’ll randomly choose a winner on July 19th and this possessed teapot will have a new home

How To Make Tea Cookies
(Earl Grey Tea Cookies recipe by The Kitchn)

via the Steampunk page on Facebook:

Use this recipe to make these http://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-earl-gre-13268 and how to make the chocolate dip would be here http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,1910,143164-224201,00.html

This is just too cute. I’m sucktastically challenged when it comes to anything crafty and done with my hands (apart from cooking, in which I don’t suck that much), especially sewing, but I’m inclined to learn to sew just so I can make something as cute as these potholders and cozy for hot beverages: (via Happy Sew Lucky)
